Cape Town AKA the “Mother City” is said to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its location is picture perfect sitting between the ocean and mountains. Did you know it’s the oldest city in South Africa? The city has over 300 years of history and cultural heritage. We are listing how to experience and learn more about Cape Town below.

As it gets close to the end of the day, take a relaxing stroll on the boardwalk at Robben Island. You’ll see many restaurants to choose from as you go…we recommend trying some South African craft beer!

It’s happy hour, somewhere right? The Cape Winelands is one of our favorite experiences. This area is an assortment of historic towns and valleys with some of the best tasting wine. Fun fact, the mountains in this area have a unique composition and provide an excellent condition for the soil which makes the wine extra tasty. Below are the key places to see when you arrive.

These wineries offer food and wine pairings, amazing restaurants and outdoor activities like walking trails and hikes through the vineyards.

Located southeast of Cape Town is Hermanus, a seaside community known for whale-watching. We recommend Gearing’s Point for a whale-watching excursion. Hermanus is very walkable with its beautiful beaches overlooking Walker Bay. There is a Cliff-Path Walk around the entire coastline of the bay which takes you through Old Harbour where you can see the rich culture of Hermanus. Below are some specific landmarks to explore.

The Addo Elephant National Park is our safari of choice. It tends to be less crowded so you can really enjoy your three days. This park is very significant because in 1931 the Addo Elephant population decreased to 11. This same year, the park was set up to protect the elephants that remain. The park has been a true success as there are more than 600 elephants living in the park today. In addition, the reserve has identified other vulnerable species who are now doing better due to the park’s resources. These animals include Black & White Rhino, Leopard, Lion, Cape Buffalo and variety of Birds. 

We love this park because its one of the most popular self-drive safari destinations and malaria-free. Visitors don’t have to book, and the roads are best for a 2X4 and 4X4 vehicles. Lastly, in the center of the park you can enjoy traditional South African barbecue (braai). This cuisine brings people in South Africa together every weekend. This is a cultural experience you must taste!

The Eastern Cape is exceptional. There is a variety of land to see from forests, sea cliffs and valleys. Some of the lands are undeveloped which makes them even more beautiful. 

We highly recommend the Camdeboo National Park where the Valley of Desolation is located. Get your cameras ready, because the views are breathtaking. The park is near the town of Graaf-Reinet where the Reinet House sits and is now a museum with 18th and 19th century furniture and even a doll collection from the First World War.

For a different view that’s equally amazing is the Wild Coast. Here you will see beautiful cliffs and beaches, rolling hills and subtropical forests. If you have time, some surrounding towns to check out include Coffee Bay, Morgan Bay and Chintsa.

For your last day, we think wondering around Port Elizabeth is perfect. The city has great restaurants, is right on the sea with the best fresh air. The Goodnight Market is perfect to taste some local flavors with lots to choose from. 

What’s next? Make sure to save room for Stanley Street which is known for a lively atmosphere and restaurants with outdoor seating along the sidewalk. The Volkswagen Factory is a sight to see as they have the oldest kombi in South Africa. The AutoPavillion is one of five worldwide and is basically a car lovers heaven. 

The last stop we recommend is Kragga Kamma which is a short drive away. It’s where you can see Buffalo, Cheetah, Lechwe, White Rhinos and Zebra!
